Shelly-Ann Frazer Takes Home Gold For Jamaica In Beijing Despite US Athletes Appeal
After a record breaking 8 gold medal performance, from the American Michael Phelps, in swimming, all eyes are now fixed on what is taking place on the tracks.
Yesterday the men 100m world record holder, Usain Bolt decimated the entire field in record time, when he clocked 9.69 seconds, to win his first ever Olympic 100m gold medal and the first for Jamaica in the history of the Olympics.
The American, and world champion, Tyson Gay, didn’t even qualify for the finals because of his fifth place finish in the semi final round. However, another American who was able to qualify for the finals, ran his best race ever to win the bronze medal.
In the women equivalent, the finals was decided a few hours ago and all three Jamaican athletes, Shelly-Ann Frazer, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, finished in the top three position with Shelly-Ann taking home the gold medal. All those who were watching got a taste of history when the two Sherone and Kerron tied for second place. What does this means? This means that the two will each get a silver medal.
The Jamaican athletes’ celebration was however short lived because the Americans filed two complaints that were ridiculous and without merit. The first complaint stated that since the Jamaican athletes tied for second place, the American, Lauryn Williams, who finished fourth, should be given the bronze medal. The complaint didn’t make any sense and it was dismissed immediately by the Olympics committee. How can someone who finished fourth be given a medal? Its nonsense and the only medal she deserves, is a copper medal. Plan A failed so they opted for plan B which was to try and have the race re-run because according to Tori Edwards she false started and the race was not recalled. She finished dead last by the way.
Objectively speaking isn’t this a big disgrace? I for one has always supported the Americans but with the playing field being somewhat leveled in track and field because of new anti-doping measures, the natural athletes will always shine through. Jamaica’s best athlete in terms of qualifying time, Kerron Stewart didn’t even get a wonderful start and she was able to power her way passed the field to tie for second place.
Everyone is wondering how Jamaica is so dominant in track and field and there is a simple answer for that, tradition. There, you finally know our secret. It’s not a special type of food we are eating, it’s not the weather, it’s tradition. Track and Field to us, is what Gymnastics is to the Chinese. As young as three years of age, our children compete competitively in track and field all the way through to high school and into college. Our champion meets are highly competitive especially at the high school level.
I really think as a people need to learn how to be gracious losers. If I was in the American camp, I would be telling the athletes that they need to re-group for the 4×100m relays and silence the Jamaicans because there is no way in hell that 100m finals for women will be re-run.
